Composing with Loops in Garageband

Objective: Students will learn the tools of GB to create a first song composed of sound loops form within the program,

no outside loops or samples are needed.


 


 

Using Garage Band you will create a song using the following parameters:


 

Total project will be 12 measures long


 


 

1. It will have a PIANO TRACK that is made up of two different piano loops, 4 measures each in the CLASSIC ROCK style


 

2. It will have a DRUM TRACK that is made up of two different drum loops, 4 measures each in the CLASSIC ROCK style


 

3. It will have a BASS TRACK that is made up of one bass loop for all 12 measures.

You may choose any style that fits.


 

4. It will have a SHAKER TRACK. You will only add the shaker on measure 3 and

4, as well as 7 and 8.


 

5. It will have an ACOUSTIC GUITAR that is made up of two different acoustic

guitar loops of 4 measures each. You may choose any style that fits.


 

6. Save your finished song as Tech1(lastname)


 


Timeline—where you assemble tracks to compose music.

Tracks—where you pull loops to. While you can add multiple loops to a single track, it often is best to add loops onto different tracks as each track can have separate settings.

Track Header and Track Mixer—the header gives you information about the track, lets you mute that track, solo the track, enable or disable recording in that track and provides access to the track's curve volume. The mixer lets you pan the track and adjust the track volume.


Zoom Slider—magnifies (or not) the timeline so you can make detailed adjustments to the timeline.

Add Track Button—click this button to add a Software or Real Instrument track.

Loop Browser—provides access to the loops.

Track Editor—lets you view and edit the tracks.


Playhead Controls—lets you record, play, rewind and fast forward through your composition. You can also set a region of the timeline to loop continuously for editing.


Time Display—shows the position of the playhead in musical time (measures, beats, ticks) or real time (hours, minutes, seconds).



Master Volume—adjusts the overall volume of the composition.

Media Browser—provides access to external media for both compositions and podcasts.

The best way to learn the interface is to try composing something!
